October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month We want to raise the communities’ awareness of SIDS and Safe Sleep environments for infants and especially remember our families who have suffered the tragedy of losing a precious baby to SIDS. SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME is the unexpected and sudden death of an infant. SIDS is the leading cause of death for babies one month to one year of age, claiming 2,200 lives each year. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome affects families of all races, religions and income levels. SIDS is not contagious or hereditary, and it is not caused by suffocation or immunizations. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is most common among infants that are 2-4 months old. However, SIDS can occur in babies up to 1 year old. At this time there is no known way to prevent all sudden infant Deaths, but there are lifesaving steps that parents and caregivers can take to help protect their baby from SIDS and SUID ( Sudden Unexplained Infant Death – where a high percentage are the result of unsafe sleep practices such as bed Sharing, use of soft bedding and stomach sleep position ) including suffocation and accidents during sleep. • Place your healthy baby on the BACK TO SLEEP • DO NOT Smoke around your baby • Use a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress covered with a tight-fitting crib sheet. • Keep soft objects, toys, blankets, bumper pads, pillows OUT babies sleep area. • Do not let your baby overheat during sleep • Think about using a clean, dry pacifier at naptime and nighttime after breastfeeding as been established • ROOM SHARE do NOT BED SHARE with your baby keep your baby’s sleep space separate but alongside where you sleep at least for the first six months. • Avoid commercial devices marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS. None have been proven safe or effective. • Educate grandparents, babysitters, daycare providers, or anyone who will be caring for your baby, how you want them placed when it is time to sleep. • Breastfeed your baby • Take good care of your baby and yourself • Provide “Tummy Time” when your baby is awake and someone is watching to help strengthen neck muscles and to avoid positional plagiocephaly (flat back of head) ENJOY YOUR PRECIOUS BABY!!! The Mississippi SIDS Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to provide SIDS information and education to the public and professionals on SIDS risk reduction and Safe Sleep environments, as well as support of research to one day eradicate this syndrome entirely.
